Van Dijk is the 'ultimate centre-back', says big Sami
One of the local LFC news sites asked during the week 'which former LFC player of the EPL era would you love to have in the team now?'.
For many it was obvious: Stevie Gerrard. Others said Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso, Luis Saurez and Javier Mascherano - all great choices.
But there were just as many who chose one Sami Hyypia. Like a fin wine, he's become better and more appreciated with age, with many realising what big Sami brought to the side after he left the club and we struggled for a world class centre back for many years.
Imagine having Sami Hyypia and Virgil Van Dijk as our centre back pairing? We'd probably never concede another goal!
So an endorsement from the man himself is something that big Virgil should not sniff at.
Speaking to Press Association Sport, he said: "I saw it right away when he came that he would be a very important part of the team.
"Straightaway he was organising the defence, he was the leader at the back, and as time has gone on he is even more important. He gives confidence to the players and makes many other players play better.
"It is very difficult to find a weakness. He is an ultimate centre-back and it would be a pleasure to play alongside him he is so good.
"He is so calm on the ball, he never seems in a hurry and he trusts his skills on the ball. It was the right decision [to sign him] because he is so important for the team, it doesn’t matter how much he cost."
If Van Dijk can win even the 6 major trophies that Hyypia did during his spell at Liverpool then he'll have had a very good career, particularly if one of those is a Champions League.
But the ultimate prize is still the Premier League, and with Virgil being cut from the same mould as Sami, all signs are good that he can go on to become a legend in his own way.
