Thompson: LFC Premier League win could spark era of dominance, that scares rival fans
According to Liverpool legend Phil Thompson, the team is coming up against a lot of hatred and opposition from rival fans because they fear a Premier League win could spark another era of LFC dominance like we had in the 70's and 80's.
The Reds currently sit 2nd in the table on goal difference, from Manchester City, albeit with a goal in hand and it's almost like the entire country is behind Manchester's smaller club.
It wouldn't be a surprise to see any Twitter polls about who wants LFC to win the title being heavily weighed against but that won't concern Liverpool fans or players, and certainly not Jurgen. A bit of siege mentality never hurt anyone!
Speaking to Sky Sports today, Phil said: "A lot of fans are worried about the cycle coming around again, not just Manchester United.
"They are frightened. That's why they are starting to get nervous of Liverpool winning the Premier League again.
"A lot of people don't want it like the 70s and 80s again and a lot of people wouldn't want Manchester United to do it again."
Like the Liverpool boss has said himself on many occasions since his arrival, Thompson believes the fans have a very important role to play. He continued: "It's quite extraordinary what this new support is at Liverpool. People say it's like the olden days, but this is new support, this is social media driven, and we've seen what Liverpool fans can do at the big games.
"Last season at the Manchester City game, the Roma game, the fans can make a real big difference and the most experience players have succumbed at Anfield. The players have to turn up and so do the fans and make it a raucous atmosphere.
"This is going to be one of those great nights at Anfield, we've had it in the past and it will be like that tomorrow night."
