Souness: LFC's back five could be around for another decade
On the back of 3 of our back five being included in the PFA Team of the Year today, Graeme Souness has stated that he believes our goalie and defence could be around for the next 10 years.
Between Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez/Joel Matip, Liverpool have had the best defence in the Premier League, conceding just 30 goals in 35 games.
While Joe Gomez had an imperious start to the season, Matip stepped in ably just after the New Year and has been an ever-present since then.
But LFC legend Souness, believes that, with Gomez, the back five could be a main-stay of our team - given their collective ages - for the next decade.
Speaking after the match last night, Souness said on Sky Sports: "If you factor in Joe Gomez instead of the Joel Matip into the back four, along with the goalkeeper, that’s a back-five, providing none of them get bad injuries, that could spend a decade as Liverpool’s back five."
Considering the oldest member of our defence - Matip aside - is Van Dijk, who is due to turn 28 in July this year, he's probably stretching the facts a bit there, but there's absolutely no reason why Van Dijk can't go on for another 5-6 years at the highest level given his supreme quality.
