Sky Sports pundit's combined LFC/Man U combined 11 exposes lack of expertise
So, it's that time of the season again as Liverpool take on Man Utd at Old Trafford and we're inundated with the nonsense that has become 'combined XI's'.
A few months back, when United arrived at Anfield, only Paul Pogba broke into that team. At that time, even that was largely a questionable selection.
But this time, Paul Merson and co. have completely gone 'full postal', with Phil Thompson bringing in De Gea, Pogba and Rashford at the expense of Alisson, Fabinho and Keita.
You could probably argue the case for Rashford, and probably even Pogba but De Gea? Alisson has out-performed De Gea across the board all season, with the Spaniard enduring a nightmare until the sacking of Jose Mourinho.
He's obviously mainly picked on reputation because all 4 of Sky Sport's main pundits pick the Spanish number 1 over our own Brazilian.
Similarly, most pundits opt for Rashford over Firmino, or in place of one of our midfielders. Whilst Charlie Nicholas reckons Nemanja Matic warrants a spot over Fabinho.
All of these can be debated, of course, but the biggest nonsense of all is reserved for Paul Merson (isn't it always, though?) who chooses Luke Shaw over Andy Robertson in some desperate attempt to shoehorn one more United player in.
In case you haven't already guessed, our opinions of 'combined XI's' is pretty low and, in this case, all it's done is expose how these so-called experts are pretty bereft of expertise.
