Player Ratings: Liverpool 4-3 Leeds United

It was a close run thing. Too close. Jurgen Klopp will have been very unhappy with our defensive display, as well as the lack of a cutting edge.

But Leeds will be annoyed to come away with nothing, as they probably did enough to deserve a point, at the least.

Liverpool were very lucky tonight, after seeing their lead stamped out three times, before a penalty a few minutes from time saved our blushes.

Those defensive blunders have followed us into the new season and it's a massive concern. It may be time to reintroduce Joel Matip for a time, as Joe Gomez has struggled since the tail end of last season.

Elsewhere, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino fluffed a host of chances between them and will have been thankful for Mo Salah finding his form at the start of the season for saving theirs, and the defence's, blushes.

Check out the player ratings below:

Alisson - Leeds' first goal should probably have seen a better reaction from the Brazil number one, but in reality, he couldn't have done anything about any of Leeds' goals. 6

Trent Alexander-Arnold - He and Gomez struggled down the right, which is worrying, considering they'll face much stiffer opposition throughout this season. Improved offensively in the second half but still not quite himself. 5

Virgil Van Dijk - A rare mistake and now, he hopefully has it out of his system. The whole team was to blame for Leeds' third, but we need the decisive and loud VVD back for the next game because he was a shadow of himself today. 5

Joe Gomez - His poor form started after the restart last season, continued through pre-season and into England duty. He was dreadful today. Responsible for at least one Leeds goal and played his part in another one. The problem with Joe is, as good as he is, he has the panic in him. Matip may just be given a nod next weekend. 4

Andy Robertson - The more solid and reliable of the back line and bagged an assist too. Looked the more dangerous of the two full backs although his delivery still wasn't at its best. 6

Gini Wijnaldum - Did a solid job, being asked to play across a few positions throughout the game. He showed us what he offers, and what we'll miss, but he couldn't do it all himself in the midfield. 6

Naby Keita - Struggled to impose himself on a hectic game, particularly where Leeds swamped us in midfield. Came off before the hour. 5

Jordan Henderson - Had a solid hour or so, looked close to his normal self but was still visibly tiring and off the pace later in the half. 6

Sadio Mane - A shadow of himself; greedy, wouldn't pass and misfiring. He's allowed an off day now and again, he has so few. 4

Mo Salah - The Egyptian King returned! Mo Salah bagged a hat-trick, albeit two were penalties, but he tucked both away with confidence and guided us to a win. Deserved his hat-trick ball and if we can have a fit and firing Mo all season we'll be doing okay. 9 Man of the Match (by some distance, too!)

Roberto Firmino - Like Sadio, Bobby was all over the place, from his first touch to his shot. He just couldn't put a foot right all day. 5

Fabinho - Came on to tighten things up and we conceded within minutes. But thankfully, that was the last and Salah's goal ensured his influence kept our goal less busy later on. 6

Curtis Jones - Did okay, but maybe wasn't what we needed at that point in the match. 6

Joel Matip - Came on to see out the win. Did that. NA
