Neville praises Van Dijk, saying young defenders should be watching LFC star
If you're an LFC fan, you already know it, but it's still taking many rival fans a long time to accept it: Virgil Van Dijk truly is the current best centre back in world football, and one key passage of play confirmed it against Spurs on Sunday.
The scores had been level at one all, and the home side were pushing for a winning goal, with Spurs looking to counter Liverpool. In one brief moment, attack turned to defence and the Reds were left with just Virgil up against Son and Sissoko.
The big Dutch man was the coolest man at Anfield and kept on pushing Sissoko on to his weaker left foot, always cutting off an angle for a pass to Son. It resulted in a half hearted effort that shot well over Alisson's crossbar.
LFC, of course, went on to grab a last gasp winner, courtesy of an OG and the rest is now history.
There's been plenty of praise for Van Dijk since the final whistle, and Sky Sports' own Gary Neville had this to say: "He picks the lesser of two evils. Sissoko can have it on his left foot, not letting him pass to Son.
"He can’t win it, you have a choice: which of these do I want to have the shot? It’s Sissoko. Really good defending".
