Matthijs De Ligt talks about potential Liverpool move to partner Virgil Van Dijk
A large part of any summer transfer talk as this season has progressed has been whether Liverpool will have to make a new centre back a priority in the summer.
The club currently has four senior central defenders, with a host of talented youth options, alongside Fabinho - who has shown his ability in that position - but you can't underestimate the importance of having a top-quality defensive option to partner the big man at the back.
Joe Gomez started the season in almost as impressive form as the man himself, but his injury in early December has sen him miss around three months of action, and even at a young age he can't yet be relied upon to be available for an entire season.
Likewise, both Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip are particularly injury prone, with Lovren in particular struggling to regularly put a run of more than 5-6 games together without a slight niggle or knock. Even when they are fit there's always debate about their quality anyway.
So it's likely that the centre back position will come under great scrutiny in the summer and the quotes from Ajax's young superstar captain, Matthijs De Ligt, gave Liverpool some encouragement when talking about potentially playing alongside big Virg.
Speaking to Goal.com, the defender said: "Virgil (van Dijk) is a player who has experience in the top leagues.
"Of course, you would want to learn from him. It’s very helpful playing alongside him in the Dutch team.
"It could happen (De Ligt joining him at Liverpool). He plays for Liverpool, a good club, but I’m not focused on them. I focus on Ajax and then I’ll see where I end up."
