Match Preview: Liverpool vs Sheffield United

Date & time: January 2nd 2020, 20:00

Where: Anfield

Is it on: BT Sports 1

Ref: Paul Tierney

The first match of 2020 for the reds, as we take on newly promoted Sheff Utd, who gave us one of the games of the Premier League season in 2019.

A tough, defensively solid side, with a real physical threat up top, the Sheffield side will not be an easy prospect as they showed Man City at the weekend.

It'll be tough, for sure, but the visitors aren't blessed with a deep, strong squad. So if it's hefty changes, it'll be a much weaker side. If not, it'll be a tired side.

Either way, Liverpool will be overwhelming favourites, and rightly so. But with Everton in the FA Cup to come on Sunday, Klopp will be wary of tiredness, potential for injury and how best to approach the game with that in mind. Expect a few changes, at least.

Injuries & Suspension

Much as on Sunday against Wolves, we're without a host of important players in Fabinho, Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Both of the latter missed the match on Sunday with minor knocks but won't be available against Sheff Utd on Thursday night. Hopefully they'll both be back on Sunday.

For the away side there are no injuries to speak of, with only John Lundstram being a slight doubt to start but he will more than likely play.

Last 5 games:

Liverpool (all comps): W-W-W-W-W

Wolves (all comps): W-W-W-D-L

Predicted Line up

As we mentioned already, with the Blues to come on Sunday in the cup, expect Jurgen to make at least a handful of changes to keep things fresh.

Liverpool have - arguably - a tougher January than we did December, with the games coming thick and fast. We could also have an extra FA Cup game, with victory on Sunday.

So rotation will be key and we will likely see one or two key players rested against Sheff Utd tomorrow, and rightly so as well.

That said, if the likes of Shaqiri and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are expected to return for Sunday, Klopp may choose to go strong with a view to resting some more senior players on Sunday night.

Starting XI: Alisson, Trent, Van Dijk, Gomez, Milner, Wijnaldum, Keita, Lallana, Origi, Salah, Firmino.
