Match Preview: Liverpool vs Salzburg (Champions League group stage)
Date & time: October 02nd 2019, 20:00 (BST)
Is it on: BT Sport
Referee: Andreas Ekberg (SWE)
It's a return to Anfield tonight, as the European Champions play in front of their own fans for the first time in the Champions League this season.
A narrow victory against Sheffield United on Saturday morning was not quite the warm-up that the Reds will have needed or wanted, and it will have given the away side some hope.
But make no mistake, you don't stop being a quality side overnight. Liverpool have had a few rough performances lately, against Napoli, Chelsea and Sheff Utd at the weekend.
Apart from the unfortunate defeat to Napoli though, we've come away from those games with wins. An attitude that Klopp heralded last season and Red Bull Salzburg will know that they'll have to be 100% at their best to even have a hope of taking anything tonight.
Salzburg are currently flying domestically, sitting comfortably top of the Austrian league, whilst they also won their first group game at home to Genk 6-2.
They're a young, pacy side and they almost certainly will pose Liverpool slightly different problems to those we faced on Saturday; this will not be an easy match tonight.
Injuries & Suspension
The Reds will be missing Joel Matip tonight, who has been ruled out of the match with a knock from the weekend. Joe Gomez will likely start in his place.
We'll also be missing Alisson still, whilst Xherdan Shaqiri will also be out. Nathaniel Clyne's continued absence is a given.
Divock Origi was back on the bench and made a second half appearance at the weekend and could be pushing for a start tonight.
Naby Keita could also be in line for a start, but should at least be on the bench. He and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be hoping for some action tonight.
Alexander Walk and Antoine Bernede are both out for the Austrian champions, whilst young striker Erling Braut Haaland is struggling to shake off a late illness.
Last 5 games:
Liverpool (all comps): W-L-W-W-W
Salzburg (all comps): W-W-D-W-W
Predicted Line up
After a hard-fought three points on Saturday morning, and playing on a Wednesday night, we've had a longer rest than any other Premier League side.
So for that reason, we can't imagine there'll be huge rotation tonight. But with Leicester coming up on Saturday afternoon, we'll see a couple of players given a slight rest.
That being said, some of those changes will be enforced, i.e. Joe Gomez for Joel Matip, who will hopefully be available for the weekend.
Starting line-up: Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Origi, Salah and Firmino.
