Match Preview: Chelsea vs Liverpool

Date & time: September 20th, 2020 - 16:30

Where: Stamford Bridge

Is it on: Sky Sports

Ref: Paul Tierney

It's the first 'big one' tomorrow afternoon, as Liverpool arrive in London to take on Chelsea in what is being billed as the first 'title clash' of the season.

Of course, the last time the two teams played was at the back end of last season when Liverpool beat Chelsea 5-3 at Anfield, culminating in that memorable clash between Klopp and Lampard.

Lampard made a bit of a fool of himself that night, and has continued to talk it down ever since, but the pressure is on the English manager big time tomorrow night after the amount of money Chelsea have spent on pretty much rebuilding the first team squad.

Liverpool go into the game knowing that they face a much more stern challenge, but know that they could still catch a fairly new Chelsea side cold if they go about their game right.

Injuries & Suspension

The Reds are definitely missing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xherdan Shaqiri, whilst newly signed Diogo Jota wasn't signed in time to be available at Stamford Bridge.

Thiago was registered in time but I'd still be surprised if he's even on the bench, let alone in the starting eleven, but Jurgen Klopp rarely does what you'd expect in his starting line-ups.

For Chelsea it looks to be a little more serious, with the Chelsea boss admitting that he'll be missing Christian Pulisic, Hakim Zayich, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva. Billy Gilmour is still out.

Lampard will be grateful that Timo Werner has been declared fit though, after having shaken off a knock during the week.

Predicted Line up

It's very rare that our team picks itself these days. Well, apart from the defence and attack. But after a nightmare for Joe Gomez last week, I'd be surprised if Klopp doesn't at least consider bringing in Joel Matip, rather than throw Joe in at Chelsea in a high pressure game.

Elsewhere, the midfield is likely to be under great scrutiny: does Thiago start? Unlikely. Will he be on the bench? It's a real possibility, but I can't see it with Milner, Keita, Jones and Minamino all fit and having had a full pre-season too.

I think that we'll see starts for all three of Thiago, Kostas Tsimikas and Diogo Jota against Lincoln on Thursday night this week.

Predicted starting XI: Alisson, Trent, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Mane, Salah and Firmino.

Subs: Adrian, Gomez, Tsimikas, Milner, Keita, Minamino and Origi
