Match Preview: Aston Villa vs Liverpool

Date & time: October 4th, 2020 - 19:15

Where: Villa Park

Is it on: Sky Sports

Ref: Martin Atkinson

It wasn't to be in the week but the boys have a chance to put things right straight away, as we visit Aston Villa looking to build on our brilliant start.

The Reds take on Dean Smith's team who are on a decent run themselves, and it'll be no easy task picking up the three points.

Liverpool will, of course, have the added incentive of knowing that a win will put us 8 points clear of Man City, already, as well as seeing us keep level with our city rivals Everton.

But, as are taxes and death, the international break is inevitable and Liverpool will not be in action after Sunday night until 17th October when we play... Everton. So to go into that game with perfect starts will make it the biggest Merseyside derby in 30 years.

Injuries & Suspension

As we know Sadio Mane is out after we discovered last night that he tested positive for Covid, whilst Thiago is still out until after the international break himself.

Joel Matip and Kostas Tsimikas will both be out as well, whilst the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Harry Wilson are likely to be on their way this week so will be left out as a precaution.

For Villa Tom Heaton, Bjorn Engels, Kortney Hause and Wesley are all out but Ross Barkley will almost certainly make his debut for the home side.

Last 5 games:

Aston Villa: W-W-W-W-L

Liverpool: W-W-W-W-L

Predicted Line up

With Sadio Mane definitely being out, I'd be surprised if Diogo Jota doesn't make his first Premier League start, so we could see a little 'rejig' up top.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson could return but, to ensure he doesn't get an errant England call up should somebody pull out, he's likely to only take a spot on the bench.

The rest of the team pretty much picks itself, with everybody either sitting out entirely, or only getting 45-60 minutes mid-week.

Predicted starting XI: Alisson, Trent, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Keita, Wijnaldum, Jota, Salah and Firmino.

Subs: Adrian, Williams, Milner, Henderson, Jones, Minamino and Origi
