Liverpool reportedly want Koulibaly, De Laurentis' 'jewel'
It's a strange (and an even more strangely worded) claim from tuttomercatoweb, who are today claiming that LFC are either ready to approach, or already in talks with, Koulibaly.
The Napoli star, valued at around £100 million prior to the pandemic, is likely to be ready for his final 'big' move once the season is over and the next transfer window is open.
At the grand old age of 28, Koulibaly is in the prime of his career and is definitely at his peak. He's probably one of few centre backs comparable with Virgil at the moment. And the prospect of a partnership between the pair is ridiculous, Football Manager/FIFA stuff.
The Cameroonian has played over 230 times for Napoli in the last six years, and has built up a gradual reputation, leading to all of Europe's top sides being linked with him at some point over the years. Liverpool included.
But a loss in revenue could lead to Napoli having to sell their greatest asset, with the Italian outlet declaring: "the jewel that Aurelio De Laurentiis has decided to sell for next season".
What they fail to also add is that Liverpool likely won't be in the market for another centre back of the 28 year old's calibre in the summer, as we will also have suffered financially and any moves we make will likely be more for squad players than £100 million superstars.
His price will almost certainly have been reduced by the time he leaves, but we seriously doubt that FSG would sanction a move of somewhere between £60-80 million, even.
The report adds that Liverpool could even relegate Matip to back up centre back, or perhaps even sell him to accommodate the deal. But they totally forget about that other top class, potentially future world class, centre back we have: Joe Gomez. Not happening.
