Liverpool have to be ready for Man City, says Van Dijk
The Reds will take on Man City on Sunday in the Community Shield, in a match which pits the European Champions against the Premier League champions.
Liverpool have not been in the greatest of 'form' though, and while pre-season results can't really be looked at with too much relevance, you still have to hope that they're not playing on the player's minds too much.
It's clear that Jurgen Klopp doesn't see the match as anything more than a glorified friendly, having spoken of the similarity to the German Super Cup but his players don't see it quite the same way at all.
Speaking (via the Liverpool Echo), Liverpool's centre back colossus Virgil Van Dijk said:
"We have to be at our top level.
"If we play like we did against Napoli on Sunday, we won’t win the Community Shield, it’s as simple as that.
"But we have a good week to prepare ourselves with a friendly as well, which is good for the boys who are coming back. We will definitely be ready for City."
While the defeats to Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla weren't exactly ideal, they were still acceptable in the sense that we had fielded a lot of young stars.
But against Napoli on Sunday, Klopp had fielded a full team of senior players and they were 3-nil down within 55 minutes. With the only positives coming from the youngsters that came on later in the second half.
Van Dijk, though, believes that Champions of Europe still have many more gears to go through. He continued: "There’s plenty more to come from the team.
"At times against Napoli we showed promising football as well, and there’s a reason why we are European champions.
"We have to stay calm, we want to win games, but Napoli were just a little bit better.
"It was quite sloppy at times, but there’s no concerns from my point of view. As I say, our season starts properly next Sunday, so our focus will be on that."
