Lawrenson: Matip has been really good, not just defensively
With all the talk of Joe Gomez's absence (and return from injury), along with rumours linking us with a move for Matthijs De Ligt, it almost feels as if Joel Matip has been totally forgotten.
The leggy defender has been something of a revelation since he returned to the starting line up in Joe's absence at the turn of the year.
Reds legend Mark Lawrenson has been so impressed by Matip, and says that it isn't just in defence that he has added something to the side.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, he said: "It would be tough on Matip [to not start the final]. He has been really, really good – and not just defensively.
"He has been a bonus because he has been coming out with the ball and committing opposition midfield players. If you’re a midfield player in that team, you’re looking at that and thinking it’s great because he’s giving you a little bit more room to play.
"I think it’ll be Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk [in the final], I can’t see any other combination."
