Koeman: Van Dijk wrong, Messi doesn't deserve Ballon d'Or
The Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has told Virgil Van Dijk that his belief that Lionel Messi deserves the Ballon d'Or are incorrect.
Instead, the former Everton boss has claimed that it is actually Van Dijk himself who should be crowned the world's best player after the incredible season the Dutchman has had.
Koeman has the luxury of having Van Dijk and Ajax's Matthijs De Ligt as his first choice centre back pairing. The two are generally considered two of the best in world football.
But there is no doubting that Van Dijk has been the best centre back in world football this season. Probably since he first joined Liverpool, if we're totally honest.
The main contenders for the award will undoubtedly be the 27 year old and Messi himself, as Virgil hopes to be the first centre back since Fabio Cannavaro to win the coveted award.
He would also break up the monotonous monopoly of Messi and Ronaldo that has claimed the award in all but a single year of the past decade.
