Joel Matip: It was nice to be back on the pitch
Popular LFC centre back Joel Matip has discussed his happiness at returning for Liverpool today, as the Reds eventually stormed to a 7-2 victory at Anfield.
Blackpool were our opponents today, managed by former U23s manager Neil Critchley, and the Reds took a while to get going. Two nil down deep into the first half, and it was looking like we were in for a similar job that faced our city rivals last week.
But a few half-time changes, and then further introductions mid-way through the second half eventually saw the home side come through comfortable winners. And it was Joel Matip that grabbed our first that began the massive turnaround.
Speaking following the match, the big centre back told Liverpoolfc.com: "It was nice to be back on the pitch and to be directly back in the stadium. I’m looking forward to the season.
"Of course, they started quite well and made us some problems, but that’s the thing about pre-season – you have to learn about things in the game. In the second half especially, we made it much better.
"You can learn from every game and every situation, even if you have not the perfect start. You always can come back."
The Reds' season will get underway at Anfield, as the defending Champions start the defence of their title against newly-promoted Leeds United.
