How did Mane score that goal? The man himself explains
Let's be honest now, that Sadio Mane goal came more or less out of nowhere. The game was rumbling along, little was happening from the Reds and Southampton looked better.
But with a few minutes of the first half left Mane took the ball on the left edge of the home side's box, worked himself some space and lashed a shot into the top corner.
The ball seemed to evade at least a couple of Southampton defenders as it rifled into the top corner and the away side later clung on for a 2-1 win in tricky circumstances.
The Senegalese captain, speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, explained how it happened. He said:
"I thought it was really open between two defenders,.
"So when I saw Millie I knew he was going to give me the ball, then I saw the man, no-one was close to me, they stood off and I tried to go a bit outside and put the ball inside."
Liverpool managed to pick up 3 points away at a tricky side, despite their 3-nil defeat last weekend, and they were eventually worn down.
Mane continued: "We know it’s part of our job.
"After playing 120 minutes in midweek it wasn’t too easy but we have to do it and we tried to recover well, come back stronger and try to give everything to try to win the games.
"I think the tiredness is here [points to his head]. It was a really important three points, really important."
