Breaking: Virgil Van Dijk to be named PFA Player of the Year
According to news in the past few minutes, Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk is due to be named the PFA Player of the Year on Thursday morning.
All indications this weekend were that Rahem Sterling might have pipped the Dutchman to the award, after another good season but Matt Lawton from the Daily Mail has announced just now that big Virg will claim the award.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool in January last year for a world record fee for a defender, with many stating at the time that it was an abhorrent amount of money and saying we'd overpaid.
But in reality, nobody could have expected Van Dijk to go on to be such a huge influence over our defence and the first of what will probably be many awards shows just how much he has already repaid the faith in him we showed by waiting from the prior summer.
Van Dijk has since gone on to play 66 games for the Reds, scoring 6 and assisting another 4. He's also played in a Champions League final.
Of course, Virgil is into another semi final of that competition and we can just hope he continues his great form into the final 3 league games too. Congrats, Virgil!
