Ballon d'Or odds now in Van Dijk's favour, say bookies
After the Champions League final, many Liverpool fans said that there was nobody more deserving of the Ballon d'Or than Virgil.
The 27 year old defender has literally gone from strength-to-strength since leaving Southampton, to the point where he is now considered the best centre back in the world.
But if you ask most football fan's opinions in England, they'll automatically point to Messi. Mainly because most of them can't stand us, but also because picking Messi is easy.
While Ronaldo's goal-scoring exploits have slowed somewhat since last season, when he moved to Juventus. Messi, though, has continued to score apace.
Van Dijk appears to have set a new standard of defensive quality though, and few defenders come close to reaching that level. And after captaining his nation to the final of UEFA's new baby the Nation's League on Thursday, he's suddenly touted as the big favourite.
The odds this morning on Van Dijk to pick up the award are now 8/11. The remaining contenders are rated at:
Lionel Messi - 6/5
Sadio Mane - 20/1
Mohammed Salah - 20/1
Cristiano Ronaldo - 25/1
Raheem Sterling - 25/1
Eden Hazard - 40/1
