Ancelotti praises Klopp, despite being overlooked for Liverpool job
It won't please the blue half of Merseyside to know that their current manager, and probably the highest class manager they've ever had, was actually turned down by LFC.
Back in October 2015 when Liverpool were looking for a new manager, Carlo Ancelotti was believed by many to be the leading candidate.
At the time, it felt to many fans like he was almost certainly the man for the job and the one that we'd most likely go for. The only question was: will he want the job.
In the end, we signed up with Jurgen Klopp and the rest is history, as they say. Liverpool are European and World Champions and look almost a certainty for our first league title in 30 years too.
Generally, it is believed that FSG wanted nobody but Klopp, once it became clear he was available. But it is also understood that they weren't keek on Ancelotti's 'demands' at that time, in that he wanted to buy an entirely new spine for the team at the first chance.
Speaking during his pre-derby press conference today though, Ancelotti made it clear he feels that FSG made the correct choice.
He said: "I had a chat, after Real Madrid, with the Liverpool owners. They were looking for a new manager but I think they made the right choice with Jurgen.
"Jurgen is doing fantastic work in Liverpool. Well done. He has created a fantastic team and fantastic players. They are in this moment in a really good shape, really good condition. But we must not think a lot about the opponent."
