Aldridge: Liverpool need to sort out Matip contract quickly
One of the unsung heroes of our run since the back end of last year has been Joel Matip's form. The centre back has been superb almost from the minute he came back into the team.
When Joe Gomez was injured toward the end of 2018, many fans felt that the defensive solidity that we'd experienced since the start of the season might waver.
But in reality, it actually got better and Matip's ability to bring the ball out from the back gave us a dimension that Gomez hadn't, up until that point.
And former Liverpool forward John Aldridge is keen for the club to sort out Matip's contract as soon as possible.
In his column for the Echo, he said: "The only thing that stuck out for me watching Joel Matip against Arsenal was the improvement in his passing.
"So far this season, it hadn't been great, but he had his confidence back on Saturday and now he is getting closer to 100 per cent.
"His goal was a really good header too. It come off the side of his head and he knew how to glance it because of the pace of the great delivery from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
"Take it from me, that was a really good header and it was important they got that opener before half time.
"What you can say about Matip is he is keeping Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren out of the side right now. That is all he can do.
"From a Liverpool point of view, he has only got a year left on his contract and that is a slight worry.
"Liverpool need to keep an eye on that and I hope they can come to terms with him and his agent, because he is getting better with age and is now first choice at the heart of the defence."
